What is Velvet Disease?

Velvet Disease (Gold Dust or Rust Disease) is caused by the dinoflagellate parasite Oodinium pillularis (freshwater) or Oodinium ocellatum (saltwater). It appears as a fine gold or rust-coloured dust coating the fish's body and fins, and is one of the most lethal aquarium diseases if left untreated.

Skin peeling in advanced cases

Causes

Introduction of infected fish without quarantine
Stress from poor water quality or temperature swings
Weakened immune system
Overcrowding
Contaminated equipment or water transfers

Velvet Disease Life Cycle and Timeline

Day 1–3
Parasite attaches to fish skin and begins feeding. Fine gold dust becomes visible. Fish may flash or scratch against surfaces.
Day 4–7
Parasite matures on the fish. Respiratory distress increases as gills become heavily affected. Fish show lethargy and appetite loss.
Day 8–14
Mature parasites drop off the fish, encyst on surfaces, and divide into hundreds of free-swimming dinospores in the substrate.
Day 15+
Free-swimming dinospores seek new hosts. Without a host they die within 24–48 hours. Leave display tank fallow for 6–8 weeks minimum.

Treatment Protocol

  • Move all fish to a quarantine tank immediately — do not treat the display tank directly
  • Darken the quarantine tank completely — Oodinium is photosynthetic and light deprivation weakens the parasite significantly
  • Raise temperature to 82–86°F (28–30°C) to accelerate the parasite life cycle and shorten treatment duration
  • Treat with copper-based medication at therapeutic levels; use a copper test kit to maintain accuracy
  • Perform daily 25–30% water changes to remove free-swimming dinospores from the water column
  • Continue treatment for a minimum of 4 weeks; leave the display tank fallow (fishless) for 6–8 weeks

Medication Options

  • Copper Power or Cupramine (chelated copper) — maintain 0.4–0.5 ppm for saltwater, 0.15–0.2 ppm for freshwater
  • Ich-X (formalin + malachite green) — effective for freshwater Velvet
  • Chloroquine Phosphate — effective alternative for marine Velvet; reef-safer than copper
  • Acriflavine — mild option for freshwater; less effective in severe cases
  • Aquarium salt (1 tbsp per 5 gallons) — supportive treatment for freshwater fish only
  • Always verify copper levels with a reliable test kit throughout the entire treatment period
Important

Velvet is highly contagious and can kill fish within days. Copper and most medications are harmful to invertebrates, corals, and live rock — never treat your display tank directly. Leave it fallow for at least 6–8 weeks.
