Meet Brian & Ron
Brian
Co-Founder & CEO
Brian’s lifelong passion for animals began at a young age, with aquariums becoming one of his strongest interests. From his first fishbowl in Grade 1 to larger aquariums, ponds, cichlids, guppies, and breeding projects, fishkeeping became a major part of his life. His early love for aquatic life also helped shape how he learned, grew, and connected with the world around him.
In 2005, Brian began working at PetSmart through a high school work experience placement and went on to spend 14 years there, eventually becoming Pet Care Manager. He became known in the community for his knowledge of fish, animal care, water chemistry, and livestock health. Later, his passion expanded into farming, where he raised chickens, ducks, goats, and sheep on his family’s farm in Chilliwack, BC.
Today, Brian brings together decades of experience in fishkeeping, animal care, farming, education, and animal welfare through Bula Aquatics. His goal is to help animals thrive while supporting aquarium hobbyists with honest guidance, healthy livestock, and a strong respect for the animals in his care.
Ron
Co-Founder & CEO
Ron developed a passion for aquarium keeping at a young age, starting with goldfish, platies, swordtails, and betta fish. After taking a break from the hobby, he pursued a career in 3D Modeling and Animation before founding UnderCity Lasers, a custom laser engraving and fabrication business specializing in wood, acrylic, and other materials, which continues to operate today.
After high school, Ron rediscovered the aquarium hobby and became fascinated by aquascaping, particularly the natural styles pioneered by Takashi Amano and James Findley. What began as a single 20-gallon long planted aquarium quickly grew into multiple aquariums, custom-built stands, and a 2,300-gallon koi pond. His passion for creating beautiful aquatic environments led him to enter the ADA International Aquascaping Contest and continually expand his knowledge of aquarium design, filtration, and fish care.
Inspired by decades of experience and a shared passion for aquatic life, Ron partnered with Brian to co-found Bula Aquatics. Together, they are committed to ethically breeding healthy aquarium livestock in British Columbia while building a trusted destination for aquarium hobbyists. As Bula Aquatics grows, their vision is to expand their breeding programs and responsibly serve customers throughout Canada.
Our Fishrooms
Bula Aquatics currently operates two dedicated fishrooms located in Richmond and Abbotsford, British Columbia. Each fishroom is designed to provide stable water conditions, high-quality filtration, and healthy breeding environments that support the long-term health and well-being of our aquatic livestock.
Our freshwater shrimp, fish, and future livestock are raised using ethical breeding practices with a focus on water quality, nutrition, genetics, and animal welfare. Every animal is carefully monitored and inspected before delivery or pickup to ensure customers receive healthy, active livestock.
As Bula Aquatics continues to grow, our fishrooms will expand to support additional breeding projects, including freshwater shrimp, tropical fish, corals, and aquatic plants. Our goal is to provide aquarium hobbyists throughout British Columbia, and eventually across Canada, with healthy, responsibly bred aquarium livestock backed by knowledgeable customer support.
